I'll second Murakami, since today I finished reading 'The Wind-up Bird
Chronicles'. It's very good, and I've enjoyed it. Great example of
ordinary people getting involved in strange events (though I'd advised
anyone interested to be patient - the weird parts are concentrated near
the ending)
