IIRC, back in the 70s, there was a guy in Paris who claimed to be the 
Comte, and had offered to turn lead into gold using a barbecue, live on 
national TV.  One show took him up on it, but when they turned up to start 
filming, the would-be-Comte had just left to tend to "other business".
