Heh, this could be a good way to start a campaign.  Tell
everyone that they are a diverse group of people dedicated
to one-upping each other.  Before each session, the players
e-mail the GM their latest prank.  The next session, the GM
hands out a newspaper with the pranks in news stories (I'm
thinking that monolith in Seattle on 2000). 
Players/characters have chuckles at this as they examine
their handiworks.  Then the newspaper involves other
"pranks" that weren't created by the players.  When they
investigate those pranks, they discover some underlying
truth to what they've known.

Just an idea.
