There was a sci-fi novel I read a few years ago, called "beggars in Spain"
IIRC, about genetically engineered children who never had to sleep, and
the social repercussions of such a change. The normal people all felt
they had an unfair advantage (given eight hours a day more time to study,
or exercise, or just relax), and eventually a whole lot of social changes
occurred because of a little difference.
My own sleep deprivation experiences involve escalators singing to me
after 65 hours or so, and conversations with people who I knew weren't
there. I've learned to go one night without sleep and not have any trouble,
though.
