It also helps when Mother Nature helps as well. Pay attention tot he
surrounding at a game table, not what happenws when it is windy outside,
since I live close to the train tracks and the shunting of cars clang and
echo throughout the area.

One evening we were playing a CoC game (this was before UA) and it was
getting close to the climatic scene where our intrepid investigators where
to come upon a sinister plot happening at a rail way yard. For background
music I selected a john williams track from Raiders Of The Lost Arc and it
was relatively eerie as the squeal of a train can be heard and the cars
clanging together.

One of the my players was freaking because a wind had picked up as well,
since the window was open and the curtians where billowing as well. As I
discribed the scene as the characters approached a rail car, they where
going to see who was going to slide open the rail door, and who is getting
their guns ready for action.

It was really intense, the wind, the sound of rail cars along the tracks and
as one of the characters slowly reached for the handle of the car...

Well all got the shit scared from us when a branch outside the window
decided to come crashing down. I screamed like a little child, everyone
jumped up and then one of players piped up "Umm, can we hold this for a for
tomorrow and play some cards!"

With the right music, tone and atmosphere you can scare the hell out of
anyone. :)
