I can only write on what I've read as I'm not part of that area. Various google searches (history oto golden dawn) brought up a number of sites that all tell basically the same story.

the joining factor is mainly crowley but there's also the factor of the late 19th centure/early 20th century occult community. You've got rosecrucians, freemasons, GD, OTO, blavatsky, etc. etc. etc. They all knew each other in different ways and traded people, ideas, whatever across like incestious piranah. "eat what you can, if its to big to eat then trade/mate with it". They all stole from other cultures, traded it around and created systems of magic that worked to various degrees despite the internal problems (see earlier post on the Sefer Yetzirah).
