It doesn't work anymore, or not well.  Canonically.  I believe that
Cryptomancy in particular has a -10% skill shift because it's out-of-phase
with modern times.  Hermeticism is widely presumed to be unpracticeable
any more.

They may prefer the old methods over the new, but they can't get the old
methods to work any more.  That's one of UA's central conceits.

There are relics of old-style magic still hanging around, like the
golems.  But the rituals used to create the first golem wouldn't work
these days.

That's why you don't see any kind of "traditional" magic in any of the UA
books -- why there's no Voudoun or Christian Magic or Hermeticism.

Of course, all of this is only the canonical answer.  There's no reason it
has to be true in your particular UA game.
