Actually our currency rates are perpetually out of whack with the US,  The
number of American cents you get for one of our dollars does not buy, in the
US, nearly as much as the dollar does here.  This is because currency
markets are perennially inefficient with regard to the US dollar (and this
is why the Euro Makes Sense).  Also we have supply side factors which make
prices lower too, so the purchasing power of an AUD looks nothing like its
currency conversion rate.

This is what's driving the wave of .pdf publishers I reckon...the
price-competitiveness angle, particularly if you want to distribute in the
US but not live there.
