I think it was Ray Winninger who first likened the average RPG company to a
shark--it had to keep moving forward, or else it would drown. RPG companies
can't rely on backstock orders. They need new and shiny things to attract the
attention of distributors. As an example, a friend of mine put out a
magazine. One distributor routinely sold out within the first week, issue
after issue. He knows this because he lives within driving distance of the
distributor, and they let the public come in and buy off the shelf. He
constantly asked them if they wanted to reorder, or order more next time
around, and each time, they said, "Nope," content to sell that many and no
more. The d20 boom is very nice, because it gives (gave) companies a shot in
the arm. Sadly, like all boom and bust cycles, the market is approaching
saturation, but several interesting products have made it through the door,
not the least of which is the CoC book. WHat needs to happen is for retailers
and distributors to remember which companies put out quality d20 products, and
call on them when the boom goes bust.

"Selling out? We have a word for that where I come from. It means, 'Not
Starving.'" - Doonesbury
