See? I told you I know how you feel.
I have never played even one single freakin' game of
Ars Magica. I've owned most the editions, at one time
or another, and sold most of them, too (more than
once) or given them away and what-not. I think that's
where my enmity with Stuart Weick started, whoever the
hell he really is.
When I got hold of old Lion Rampant's first version of
Ars Magica, I wanted to try it, but my group would
countenance nothing for 2 long years but Shadowrun (I
managed to ween them on, first, Nightlife and then, to
my eternal regret, Vampire. We wouldn't have made it
if it hadn't been for hunters hunted and a character
called Ricky Lancaster. A UA version of Ricky would
have a skill called "Crash Dramatically Through Window
in the Nick of Time 87%" It probably would have been
a channel of his avatar.)
I got really excited with the Iberian campaign
booklet, but it was, quite frankly, crap. I know more
about Moorish Spain than the book even hints at and
the whole damn thing stinks of the Black Myth (as my
sister puts it. I forget who she's quoting.)
And don't even TALK to me about troupe style play.
I'd be sitting pretty with Ian Millington's ERGO if I
could get that kind of "high concept" game to work. Pffsh!
