Yeah, but Naked Lunch is just snippets and vignettes. 
Lethem actually tells a story using some pretty
strange imagery.

Besides, surreal doesn't have to be mugwhumps and
obscene typewriters.  It can be a room that's all blue
which keeps showing up in every significant house the
PCs investigate.  It can be a dipsomancer with a
mentor who only shows up after the adept belted back a
few strong ones (a very spiritual master) or an
enormous office suite, full of cubicles and built in a
carpeted warehouse space.  It's vitally important you
see Anne Bodenham about the Glasgow witches, but she's
never at her desk and, despite their trench coats and
guns, everyone in the office just keeps pointing the
PCs in another direction when they ask about where
Bodenham might be.  Eventually, they find her tied to
a stake in some conference room, roasted alive.
