It's more likely to be something Avatar-related. Each contestant takes on
the aspect of their home country (which the cheesy video montages before
each song reinforce). Maybe it's some true king/marriage to the land thing -
back in the good old days, there was enough fertility and magick to go
around, and every land could have their own dying year king thingy ala
Frazer*. Nowadays, that sort of peaceloving hippy crap magick's nearly gone,
so you've got this contest for the avatarhood. The winning Eurovision singer
brings back the healing energy to their homeland - but instead of
sacrificing their lives, they sacrifice their careers (which is why you
never hear of any of 'em again).
Ireland won the Eurovision three times in the last few years, and suddenly
we've got the fastest-growing economy in Europe. Co-incidence? I think
not**.
