Actually, in most editions of Runequest, you're rather more competent than you are in CoC or Elric as good stats would add to your skill values. (Except for size; it was almost always bad to be big.) This was especially true in second edition RQ, where Dexterity was overvalued in how it affected your skills and was relatively cheap to increase. It was entirely possible for someone with no training whatsoever in swordplay to have skill values over 50 percent if he managed to train his dexterity to species maximum, which he could do even if he started at, say, a value of 6 on a 3-18 scale, as their sample character, Rurik the runelord proved.
To get this back to UA...heroquesting, in RQ in the vague terms in which it was described, rather resembled pornomancy, in a way: a heroquester was attempting to exactly replicate the journey of a particular ancient hero or deity in order to receive some mystical benefit. It generally didn't involve sex, though. Unless your heroquester was trying to draw on some portion of the power of Uleria, the goddess of passion...

(It should be noted that d20 Elric is already out: Dragon Lords of Melnibone.)
