One interesting way to go with this is to take a nod from Peter David's and
Paul Jenkins's run on Incredible Hulk. In PAD's run, the author tried to
integrate all the jumbles of continuity with the notion that Bruce Banner
was abused as a child (which is weird, since they'd already established the
death of his mother and a miserable relationship with his father, without
having any of this in mind). The result of this abuse was the fracturing of
his psyche into three distinct personalities, "Puny Banner," "The Savage
Hulk" (the "HULK SMASH!!!" guy), and "Joe Fixit" (the original grey Hulk,
who ended up working as a torpedo in Vegas for a time). Each had his own
set of powers, triggered by the gamma blast (fer instance, the Grey Hulk's
strength and endurance were adrenaline fed--he'd bleed, but he'd just heal
it up so fast, you wouldn't notice the difference). Somewhere down the
line, Doc Samson, a shrink who purposefully exposed himself to gamma
radiation in order to better fight the Hulk, realized that no one but the
Hulk seemed to have the capacity to transform from one state to another.
Everyone else who was similarly irradiated either died or became 'stuck' in
some altered form. After capturing the Hulk, he managed to integrate all
the personalities into what Banner should have become when the Gamma blast
went off--but when he transformed into the Savage Hulk in a period of
intense stress, it became obvious that this 'composite' (the Professor) was
really just another alter. More recently, Paul Jenkins went the novel route
of nailing Puny Banner with ALS, a condition not shared by the other Hulks.
Now he _has_ to pass over control to the other psyches, because the longer
he stays Puny Banner, the more debilitated he'd become. In a trip into his
own psyche, Puny Banner became aware of the fact that the Gamma radiation
infected ALL of his alters, each in its own way, and that most of them were
currently trying to keep one bad mofo from taking control--the Devil Hulk,
which possesses all the strength, psyche, and none of the restraint of the
other alters.

You could do this along similar lines--have the alters track down a murderer
that they're compelled to stop, for some reason. In reality, it's another
aspect of the self, that wants to achieve some measure of vengeance before
some fate that only it knows about, is realized.
