I bought the game because my friend Mike Bowman talked
me into playing it. He'd already been slipping bits
of UA into a mage game we'd been playing (like doing
away with the Technomancy and turning all the
Traditions into weird little cabals. My group really
liked that.)
I, too, was turned off by the cover and, oddly enough,
I'd also heard some bizarre rumours about it being a
bad system.
I ended up really digging it, even though the game we
played was a complete disaster. Only the person who'd
read the book knew what to "do." I was playing a
mechanomancer based on Horrabin from Tim Power's
Anubis Gates (I made tubs Paut with my charges.)
I really liked the simple way skills and attributes
were handled and the magic system was pretty easy to
grasp.
What I really ended up liking were the little cabals,
although that's, at first, what turned me off to the
game. All the naked goddess/Alex Able stuff is
interesting, but only after you've read the rest of
the setting. My friends kept trying to sell me the
game by telling the naked goddess story and I just
didn't care.
Once I read the game, though, I realized why they had
fixated on it. The point was that the video tape with
the ascension on it served as a kind of metaphor for
the way things were coming together amidst all these
little groups who could "really use magic."
