actually i thought the tragedy of the searchers is that ethan *can't* stick
around for a while. he walks off outside, framed on his lonesome by the
doorway, because it's not his home anymore. he represents the old west, the
violence and "rugged individualism", and is making way for the new ways of
family and peace.
aside from that i pretty much agree with everyone you said. or think it's a
pretty good handle on it anyway :)
