Some things have to be abstracted for safety and playability. Regarding
combat and death, I prefer very fast mechanics - "Okay, you two are
fighting. Draw a card. Right, the big guy with the knife will win, and leave
you bloody on the ground - please act that out so that other people can
enjoy the spectacle."
Some players will happily act the secene out once you decide upon the
results. This is entertaining (provided they do so safely) and I try to find
ways to reward such players.

There would need to be some way to handle charges, spells and taboos. Once I
figured out what that was, I wouldn't include schools that broke the "lame
mechanic". Unfortunately, some things just don't translate well.
