For my money the most UA spot in California is none of these: It's the
Broadway ave. in Oakland between 12th and grand ave. You have this street
that used to be an urban center. Two blocks in one direction is the
financial district, gated communities, and a police station. Two blocks the
other are crackhouses, gun shots and ghetto birds. This street is usually
quiet because there's a BART (regional subway) station here, but all you
have to do is walk two blocks and the world is an entirely different place.
I think that UA is all about that moment, the second when an obsessed,
socially cut off loser can whistle and change the world, that a car thief
could ascend as the good samaritan, or that a group of twenty-three year old
occultists who all dropped out of college together could save the world...
In other words, is a Bigfoot hunter more UA than, for
instance, Patty Hearst.
Patty Hearst I think is way more UA because it's simply a more frightening
prospect. Bigfoot hunters are a punchline...
