Stress checks are very good for curbing metagame playing. For example, if a 
PC seems remarkably blase to a violent attack (because the player knows 
mathematically that he could not have taken more than X points of damage) 
then a Violence check may remind the player that these experiences are 
actually pretty horrible. Either the PC will fail the check (and freak out, 
or whatever) or he will act as originally stated - but become more hardened 
to the world.

It's more satisfying to allow concsequences to prompt appropriate responses 
from PCs than it is to bully them.

If only there was a similar system to check GM laziness and inconsistency...
