Liam (non-guru) suggests:

Give away the basic rules and a scenario on the web. Charge nothing.
Give people enough to play all the mechanics of the game, and a sketch
of the background which shows enough to tell them who the major players
are (perhaps not the Naked Goddess stuff, but TNI, Order of St. Cecil,
Max Attac, Sleepers, Clergy, Renounciation?). And a scenario they can
pick up and play easily enough, that shows a possible tone for the game,
allows for player-created characters (or a set provided, or any
combination), and has an opening for further play beyond the scenario
(ie could start a campaign, if only a short one).

Promote the heck out it.

Should result in more people catching the virus which is UA, and
spreading it. You have told them enough that they know what they are
buying with the other books. But still those books are required, or
useful, to them.

Work on getting people to want to buy the books because they know what
is covered in them, and want the information there, not that the don't
know what is in there, and need the information to continue. UA already
does this the right way. You just need a stripped down entry mechanism
(something to make you want to by the rules) using the same principles.

That's what I reckon, anyway.

Beyond that? Perhaps the 3 books a year proposal (two thin one thick) is
probably the best compromise. So long as they are topic-split, and not
artifically split.

Take care,

Liam
