Do I think that if UA would sell better if it had come out with a bigger
print run, immediate support, and a string of supplements in the pipe? No
way to know. The only NEW game I've seen presented that way was
Deadlands.
However, Deadlands was a big hit.
Deadlands also covered a genre (the western) which had never been covered
well in a new way, creating an entire new genre (westernized cthulhu). UA,
unfortunately, didn't blaze as much new ground. It covers in a lot of ways
the same genre as Kult but with greater playability.
I'm not entirely disagreeing with you, but I think this makes a difference
in terms of what gamers will buy it. Deadlands also could more easily be
sold to the average "I only play white wolf" gamer. I know, I convinced
four people to pick up deadlands over werewolf the wild west. They all
thanked me for it.
But, the release model of a deadlands I'm sure appeals to the retailer.
Look at the logic: I can fill a rack with different products for this new
game and create the option that a new player will buy within a month of each
other: player's book, first sourcebook, some region-specific book in which
to run the game; the four books that go more deeply into the types of magic.
Or the UA/Pagan appeal to retailers: There's five books in the line, that's
all the person is likely to buy in a year.
So I'm sure that makes a difference to the retailer, if not the customer
