I've almost been knocked unconscious several times, but it was during
karate classes in which the the instructor was demonstrating knockout
techniques. So, I suppose, as close to "lab conditions" as you're going to
get with the fighting sciences.

>From my personal observations of the "instant knockout," I have formed the
following opinions. (Which are, of course, mine alone.)

1) It's possible to knock someone cold with one punch without doing severe
damage.

2) It is both complicated and difficult. That is, you not only need to
know what you're doing in theory, you need to have the skills to apply the
theory in a highly contingent situation. (In all the one hit knockouts I
was shown, you needed to hold the fellow with your other hand.)

3) It doesn't work equally well on everyone. That stuff worked on me like
a bottle of Jack Daniels because I'm skinny and (apparently) have a jumpy
nervous system. Some people you could hammer on all day and they'd just
get a little dizzy.

4) Choking someone out is simpler and more reliable. This from a former
military policeman who was an expert in these knockout techniques.

So, all in all, I'd gauge your chances of knocking someone out with one
punch at something like 1%. Gee, if only there were some way to simulate
that in the game...

Now, in reality you can set people up for knockout punches, but putting in
elaborate rules for how you can knock someone out with a series of blows
over several rounds sounded like WAY too much trouble for the payoff.

If the reinstatement of capital punishment was clearly doing nothing to
reduce the number of murders in those states permitting it, it certainly
appeared to be cutting down on the number of confessions.
