I vaguely remember one of the Authority story arcs being along those lines.
Evil genius tries to destroy world. Heroes defeat evil genius' forces, break
into evil genius HQ, and say "we're here to stop you." Evil genius says "ah
bugger. I've turned into one of those world-shaking threats you people deal
with."
Heroes say "yeah...but you're a genius. We're going to deal with you by
recruiting you."
