Just to partially tie up some of this thread, The Encyclopedia of Things
That Never Were [1] claims Bacon was actually writing about Australia
and begins a "compare and contrast" in the entry.

[1] One of my absolutely favorite books, even though I wish it was
annotated.  The bibliography is good, but many times I don't know which
book they're referencing.
