The elves in my favourite fantasy RPG setting are like Mongolian raiders. 
They don't have silver hair, they don't have magic swords, and IIRC magic 
use is considered a feminine activity - male wizards have to live in the 
women's tents.

The only problem that I have with elves in RPGs is that I quite like the 
different portrayals that I've seen done by Katherine Kerr, Tad Williams, 
and the like, but people don't seem to play them that way. I don't know if 
it's too hard, I've never tried.


I agree with what you say about mood, BTW.
