There's a sizable rant in one rpg book(QAGS by Hex Games: www.hexgames.com ) I read which basically claimed all people playing elves were simply using it as a way of making an uninteresting character 'cool' by giving it silver hair and the like.
I don't think all elf characters are like that, but I've seen enough in that vein to never create an elf myself.

I don't think maturity and horror have to go hand in hand, just that deliberately maintaining a mood in a group requires a certain level of maturity. Non-horror games rely less on mood than story, or on combat and powergaiming, or a variety of other things, to keep the playersinterested. Because horror games require more cooperation on the part of the players, there's that level. (At least, that's my best guess based on several horror and non-horror games I've played to varying degrees of success).
