But he could channel the Hero archetype without believing in it. As has been 
discussed in the past, you don't have to believe in an archetype to become 
its avatar - you just have to act the part and not break taboo.

You could have a very Watchmen-esque avatar of the hero in UA, provided that 
he was smart enough to avoid breaking taboo.
