I don't see anything wrong with quotes.  In fact, I
wish I owned a copy of Bartlet's Familiar Quotations. 
They can be a little pretentious, I guess, but they
also sound just dandy.

What I DISLIKE is self-quotation, or making up a quote
from an imaginary source and then using it to preface
a chapter relating to the same imaginary world where
the source exists.  I'm sure there's a simpler way to
say that, but I think Stolze and Tynes saved
themselves by putting RL quotes next to their invented
ones.  But only just barely.

PS. That reminds me.  A lot of people on this list (a
lot of people on the internet, in fact) have signature
lines with quotes in them.  I can't remember who it
is, but my favourite so far has been "Anything said in
Latin sounds profound."
