Perhaps his attempts at puttin himself down were a method
o envy-based magick?  Insult yourself, and get others to
insult yourself, to build up magick power.  Built in
paradox and the like.

Once I had a discussion with someone here I ended up
arguing Envy was the best of the Seven Deadly Sins,
because it was the most pure of sins, that is there's no
real reard for envying someone, as there is for Sloth or
Gluttony.
