You got it in one -G.  The blood that was taken was replenished by the 
system as normal before the event, though.  So the athlete has an extra pint 
of blood going through their veins.  That relates to a sharp boost in blood 
pressure in a very short time.  That leads to the smooth muscle surrounding 
veins to be injured.  Repeated blood doping can lead to the body's inability 
to regulate its own blood pressure.

Add in the fact that the spleen has to process much more old RBCs and you 
get spleen damage similar to what binge drinking does to your liver.

Once in your life might be okay, but making it a habit is a very bad thing.

Certainly much worse than the urine thing I mentioned before (which actually 
was a raver and not some athlete though).
