Been lurking on here for a bit, figured I would add in my two cents.

Actually I see schools such as these or others that would require a lot of
out of game time to things are more geared towards campaigns.  In one game
(although no UA) I play in I have a painter who practices magic through his
art.  Some of the stuff I have slowly made my character capable of include -
trapping souls, cleansing locations of evil, anything runic based, creating
gates etc.  But this would be a completely unusable character in short term
series of adventures or one shot games.
