Your story about the two guys, Bill and Carl, is
reminiscent of "In the Company of Men," which explores
similar themes in a much crueler way.  You seem like a
movie buff and I'll assume you've seen it.

It includes the misogynistic manipulation of a woman
as well and the guilt of one member of the deal.

Actually, my real ObUA question is: what profit does
the merchant get out of the deal?  It is a really
nifty idea for a backstory -I want to use it, it's
very O'Henry-, but I'm having trouble thinking up a
profitable angle for the merchant.  I assume he'll
want a list of the names and numbers of those who've
contracted aids (to offer them a special deal) and
maybe a special favor from Carl.
