The part that makes it UAble, in my mind, is hiw life mirroring his fiction, which seems at times deliberate (like the play based off the first trial).  Perhaps he's doing some Bibliomantic mojo by imitating his stories.  Perhaps this recent perjury conviction was in fact an attempt at some big mojo by deliberately revealing the evidence and getting convicted, like a villain in some b-grade novel.

Of course, I know nothing about the actual facts of the matter, and that all just applies to a fictionalized version of the events wildly abstracted from reality.
