I'd be inclined to say that the man they believe to be the Comte is simply not 
the Comte. It depends on the kind of story you want to tell, and any of a number 
of outcomes might be appropriate depending on the themes you want to emphasize. 

I would construct the encounter differently, depending on the events leading up 
to it. Many would probably be contingent on some kind of death-wish on the part 
of the Comte. The death of God is a common theme in literature since before 
Nietzsche... a hundred different ways to spin it.
