Allow me to also recommend Devil in a Blue Dress, Boys N the Hood, The 13th
Floor (for some inspired glimpses of what LA was), Falling Down (a _great_
LA 'slice of life' movie...heh), and the book Always Running, by Luis J.
Rodriguez, which describes life in an LA Latino gang
