avatars, and the Emerald City is some sort of metaphor for the Statoshpere,
with the Wizard being some ascended guy (The Magus, possibly).

The Wizard is the Comte, deftly existing as both the Wizard of Oz and as
Professor Marvel, in both the Statosphere and Earth. Dorothy is the Fool.
Baum shaped the entire story as an attempt to graft the power of the
Statosphere to his (at the time unborn) daughter, Ozma, who he named after
the rightful ruler of Oz. Enough people read the Oz books and believed Ozma
was the Princess of Oz that when his daughter came of age, she had an edge
up on other contenders for the Queen of Dreams archetype.
And the entire thing was cemented when that crew member ritually hung
himself a la the Hanged Man during the filming of the movie. Sure--they
tell you it was just an optical illusion, but others know the truth,
especially when combined with the ritual torture of Margeret Hamilton during
filming (she was allergic to the green make-up she had to wear) and the slow
disintegration of Judy Garland as Ozma Baum drained off the movie star's
life energy in her bid to become Queen of Dreams. What could be more potent
drink for an aspiring Queen of Dreams than the life of a movie star?
