did you ever see the comic book Replacement God?  Small Press, B&W, now hard to find (for me, anyway) by a guy now working with Alan Moore.  Anyway, the first issue is about a guy trying to escape from castle dungeon.  It's like his 347th time trying, and it never seems to work.  Though the people he tries it with always make out fine, circumstances work out such that he is always caught before making it out.

There's more to the comic than that, and we don't see the other couple hundred attempts, but that's all that applies to the thread at hand (though I could write some stuff about the Godhood therein and avatarhood, or the Church of the Big Hole in the Ground, but I won't).
