Thanks for the input. I like the ideas about keeping the box closed and
undisturbed, and the influence of perception in the magick. As for the
proxy issue, my thought was as the box allows to mess probabilities,
attacks fail to hit you, people don't notice your presence, and the
like. Actually, the more I think about it, the more it looks like a PoMo
version of the inmortal sorcerer putting his heart in a box.
The curse can be a false rumour, a flaw of the box or just the Big
Powers in the Sky (the Clergy or the Cruel Ones) who don't like people
who can't stay dead (or alive).

Yup, it's inspired by the Eye Artifact showed in The Stress of Her
Regard. I don't remember much about it, but it was supposed to change
states of certainty/uncertainty, right? There's also some influence of
"Quarantine", by Greg Egan. You can never get enough fun messing with
quantum mechanics.
