I had something like this once-only it was a ritual. A player had been 
kidnapped and left locked in a box in the Desert. The other players, who were 
facing a 6 month long trial for murder(They got off), knew he'd be dead by 
the time they got to the box.

So the called in a favor, and got an NPC to perform a Ritual with a lot of 
Quantum Physics mumbo-jumbo, a magic cat, etc, and made the universe decide 
the entrapped player was "alive" and not "Dead."
