Have Chris turn up dead.  Have the character be the last person who saw her 
alive.  Have a neighbour report his description to the police.  Have his 
face on the 6pm news as someone that the police would like to have help 
with their enquiries ...

And then work out who killed Chris, why, and whether they're trying to pin 
this on the character or not.
