You could start a game by giving each player individually an idea why they are at the party or wherever they're gathering, but not why everyone else is there, and then start the group session with "So then Jimmy pulls a gun" (or appropriate opening line) and everyone knows why they react as they do but not why the other players and NPCs act as they do. Kind of gives the feeling of haing walked into the middle of something were you were planning something different.
