A tactic that I find effective is to start a session this way, but give them
enough to go on.
For example, "you are looking for an book with a latin name. You've broken
into the duke's apartment and are currently in the study. The door opens..."
And then the action starts.
Often, people complain: "What book? Who is this duke?"
I find that a reassuring "It will be explained later" normally quiets these,
especially if their ponderings lose them initiative (as someone else said
they did)...
