Your story reminds me of a witchcraft trial I remember
reading way back when. This trial occured during the
height of the mania in Wurzburg. Anyway, in it, an
young woman was accused of "Hag Riding" her paramour.
In this case, Hag Riding was more than the mere
nightmare of a crone sitting on his chest: she
actually transformed the young man nightly into a
horse, complete with bridle (thus the bitter metallic
taste.) His story was remarkably similiar, especially
the bit about being scratched in the side when he
tried to pretend it was all a dream.
That isn't the only instance of Hag Riding where the
witch-figure keeps the subject in confusion despite an
attempt at lucid dreaming. Most of the ones I've
heard of in a similiar vein include the
transformation-into-a-horse hypothesis, although I
don't remember the exact country of origin. It seems
like a Scots tale, somehow, but I'm not sure and I
don't have time to research it this week.
I was thinking that this all kind of reminded me of
the way weres are handled in UA. There's a folk tale
about a firey-eyed horse who stalks the woods (called
a Grant.) Like a lot of horse fairies, this one can
take human form. Maybe an equestrian daemon has
something to do with all this.
