Horatio Alger wrote a number of books with very similar plot lines, about 
the Poor Boy Who Makes Good Through A Combination of Luck, Pluck, and 
All-around Good Character.  The kid who starts out as a poor orphan selling 
apples on a New York streetcorner and eventually becomes a multi-millionare 
because of his unceasingly hard work....  You know the drill.  Suits AA 
pretty well, if you have a broad definition of "good works".
