Horatio Alger wrote a number of books with very similar plot lines, about
the Poor Boy Who Makes Good Through A Combination of Luck, Pluck, and
All-around Good Character. The kid who starts out as a poor orphan selling
apples on a New York streetcorner and eventually becomes a multi-millionare
because of his unceasingly hard work.... You know the drill. Suits AA
pretty well, if you have a broad definition of "good works".

"Yes, I am acquainted with Mr. DePalma," Dr. Hsu said. "He was
my pupil years ago. A young man not without talent, but slapdash,
and huckle-muckle in his worksmanship."
"What did you say?" the mayor asked.
"He's a jerk," Dr. Hsu Ting Feng said.
