>Knowing about the various types of magic (pornomancy,
>dipsomancy, etc....) is out of character knowledge?

This is totally one of those Your Milage May Vary kinds of things. My
personal instinct is for characters to start out knowing little to nothing
about the OU; however, if I were playing with a group of people who'd
rather start out knee deep, I'd be able to roll with that.

I think the problem that was described is that the game started out as the
former, but then one of the players brought out-of-character knowledge into
it. Switching in the middle of the game, with no rationale, is the problem.
(And I like Greg's suggestion, though I'm not sure about the large stress
checks....)

Completely off-topic, but while I'm writing: Just saw the movie "Memento" a
couple of days ago, revolving around a guy who has no short-term memory,
and so has to use Polaroids and notes to himself to remember where he is
and who he's met. Very, very disturbing, and something that most of the
people on this list would enjoy. Probably has UAable bits, but nothing
super-obvious, just a general f*cked-up vibe.
