It's always good to cover all the bases

Of the few who openly objected to the film, critics accused the Russian roulette sequences as being false and something that could have never happened. However, Michael Cimino intended for this and replied that no one could absolutely know for sure if such situations could have taken place. In addition, I recently received an E-Mail message from Valerie Douglas who said that her father and late cousin were in the Vietnam War and that Russian roulette did, in fact, occur, both for gambling and murder.

Michael, the Russian roulette had nothing to do with the atrocities
Lee quite correctly describes. The Russian roulette game was run by
Saigon gamblers using (screwed up) volunteers and had nothing to do
with the communists at all. You are correct such games are a figment
of the moviemaker's imagination.
So the answer seems to be, "Maybe." I don't think it's possible to say that it never happened, but it could have. A better question to ask, IMO, is who had access to revolvers. Most American firearms were automatics, which makes for a sucky game of russian roulette. What was the Vietcong's sidearm of choice?
