In elementary school I was taught that the word was "Croatan," but sometime
in high school I read in some book that the word was just "Cro," and the
best guess was that "Croatan" was intended, but unfinished.

I don't know if that's true or not, but you are correct about the Croatan
and related tribes later exhibited blue eyes and brown hair every now and
then.
