Three young men came into my classroom at the beginning of school. I wanted to
assess them a little, so I asked the first little boy, "What's three times nine?"
"Eighteen," he replied.
Needs work, I thought. "Do you know?" I asked the next little boy.
"Tuesday," he replied.
Let's let this one's meds stabilize, I thought. "Do you know?" I asked the last
little boy.
"Twenty-seven," he replied.
"Wonderful!" I said, "Can you tell the others how you got that?"
"Well, I took eighteen minus Tuesday, and that's twenty-seven."
