I got a few things in my mind.  First is why Abel doesn't ascend.

He's trying to be the Merchant.  But that's not him.  He gets hella 
syncronycity from his practices.  He built his empire on corporate raiding.  
Boom, he gets wind of the NG tape.  He uses his same raider tactics in the 
occult underground.  Things are sweet.

After a while he gets his foreign legion deal going and he doesn't need to 
raid.  He can infiltrate with more subtlty and gain what he needs.  That's 
the problem. He's essentially a raider.  He thinks that he's found more 
effective and less dangerous techniques.  Except it's the techniques that 
makes the avatar.  He gets the power, but it's not the power that he truly 
wants or needs.  To paraphrase Nietzche he is not becoming who he is.

Likewise there's more than a few pornomancers out there.  They all imitate 
what they see in their videoes so that they can become more like the naked 
goddess.  Problem is here that not many of them are showing signs of being 
avatars of TWECHBY.

My theory is that someone in the HoR saw a copy of the Tape and felt 
compelled to own it.  That copy happened to be on their person when they 
brought someone into the House and now there's a fork among the NG tapes.  
Some are legit.  Others are agents of renunciation that otherwise appear to 
be the real deal.

I don't know. My mind wanders from time to time.
